Koko has a sign language vocabulary of over 1000 words, which she uses in complex statements and questions.
Most of these signs are standard American Sign Language (ASL), but some are natural gestures (intrinsic to gorillas), some are invented (untaught) and some ASL signs are slightly modified by Koko
to form what we call Gorilla Sign Language (GSL). This section will help you become familiar with all of Koko's signs,
and thus to learn to communicate both with Koko and those who know ASL. Language is a powerful tool; by teaching Koko our language, we have empowered her to express her thoughts, feelings and needs.
One thing we have learned from her is that she would like us to save her species, and be more "polite" to gorillas. |
