Michael the Gorilla
Memorial Service

On Saturday, May 26, 2001 (a little over a year after Michael the gorilla's passing) the Gorilla Foundation held a (second) small service in honor of his memory. The service was held in a small secluded "sculpture garden" on the campus of Stanford University, and was attended by about 30 people who were closely associated with either Michael or the Gorilla Foundation. Dr. Penny Patterson, the foundation's president and research director, presided over the service. Dr. Patterson spoke from the heart and also read a speech about Michael that was prepared and concurrently delivered in Africa by Dr. Anthony Rose (GF Conservation Director) to open a new "Michael Sanctuary" for orphaned gorillas. Then she introduced several other speakers who read appropriate quotes about Michael, gorillas, our relationship to animals in general and even the environmental crisis. Michael's powerful memory continues to inspire us to dedicate our lives to the preservation and care of these endangered species; just as Michael dedicated much of his life to learning to speak to us in our own language.
