Koko"s Gaze

How many of you have ever looked into the eyes of a gorilla? Those who have will never forget that what they saw was a reflection of themselves - a deep, kind, intelligent soul, whose physical appearance is in some sense just a thin illusory veneer compared to the wisdom within.

But beyond Koko"s gaze is a layer of language acquistion - American Sign Language - that makes the connection even more real and sustained. And makes us realize that we are not alone on this planet - though if we don"t take better care of our kindred great apes, we may be soon.
