Koko eats veggies out of a container, including some small carrot sticks. Bet she"s wishing she had a dip to go with it.

People are always surprised at the volume of raw vegetables (we call it "produce" or "browse") that Koko and other gorillas can eat in one day. It"s not unusual for Koko to have 4-5 heads of lettuce per day, plus lots of other veggies, fruits, complex carbs, and of course protein. It"s what it takes to keep a gorilla healthy in captivity, plus a little intellectual enrichment and personal communication to keep them happy.

Koko, you
