Koko had been having a problem with one of her teeth for quite a while, and told us both via sign language and by pointing to a pain chart that registered between 1 and 10. When Koko started pointing toward 9, it was time to act.

On Sunday, a number of dental and medical specialists visited Koko (yes, doctors do house calls for gorillas) and, while she was under anesthesia, they performed both a tooth extraction and a comprehensive medical exam. Both were successful and Koko was given a clean bill of health.

Koko will be eating soft foods (laying off the produce) for a few days, but after that she"ll probably start enjoying her food a lot more than during those annoying pain-chart days.
