[title] => Dr. Penny Patterson and her Dad are Aligned on this Point...
[body] => Yesterday, we featured, Dr. Penny Patterson"s father, Dr. Cecil Patterson, in the KokoPix PhotoBlog. Today, we just wanted to emphasize how closely aligned they are on the matter of great ape conservation. Both Pattersons seem to agree that the future of great apes (including humans) depends on the willingness of humans to wake up to the reality that we are not the only conscious beings on the planet, and that the "purpose" of other (non-human) beings is not ours alone to decide. The challenge then is for "humans" to become more conscious (not gorillas). If you don"t believe that Dr. C. and Dr. P. are in alignment on this, just check out their body language in this photo.

[title] => Koko"s Feeling Better Every Day
[body] => Koko has been recovering quickly since her dramatic tooth and gum procedure (almost 2 weeks ago) and is essentially off all of her pain medications. In her new, progressively pain-free life, Koko"s focus has also changed. Just yesterday, when Penny was discussing the plans for the new Maui Ape Preserve with colleague Chris Mitchell (founder of the Michael Sanctuary for orphan gorillas in Cameroon, Africa), Koko, who was overhearing their conversation, immediately went to her room, grabbed an Hawaiian lei and put it around her neck and picked up her favorite baby doll. Koko is very clear about her priorities.

[title] => Ndume"s a Little Stressed by Recent Events
[body] => Ndume, Koko"s male companion, has been a little anxious since Koko"s medical procedure last week. Not because he"s read the recent press release or had a sign-language discussion with Dr. Penny Patterson. But because of all the strange visitors that have been on the premises. A Silverback"s mission in life is to protect his family, and having a team of medical experts working on one"s companion (Koko) behind closed doors would increase the stress level of any male gorilla - even one as laid back as Ndume. Fortunately, extra attention by Gorilla Foundation caregivers (including Penny and Ron) are helping Ndume slowly return to his normal sweet and calm disposition.

Yep, that"s the same one Koko has with her out in the yard one month later, and which has almost become part of her decor. Fortunately, she hasn"t asked us (yet) for a computer to complete the set- possibly because Koko"s already experienced computers and knows how distracting they can be.

[title] => Koko Points to and Solves the Problem
[body] => Koko had been having a problem with one of her teeth for quite a while, and told us both via sign language and by pointing to a pain chart that registered between 1 and 10. When Koko started pointing toward 9, it was time to act.

On Sunday, a number of dental and medical specialists visited Koko (yes, doctors do house calls for gorillas) and, while she was under anesthesia, they performed both a tooth extraction and a comprehensive medical exam. Both were successful and Koko was given a clean bill of health.

Koko will be eating soft foods (laying off the produce) for a few days, but after that she"ll probably start enjoying her food a lot more than during those annoying pain-chart days.

[title] => Koko"s Starting to Feel Like Herself Again!
[body] => On the first day after Koko"s dental work and medical exam Koko was feeling some pain (which we dealt with via pain medications prescribed by the docs). By the second and third day (today), she was feeling a lot better, reducing the pain medication toward zero, and more energetic than we"ve seen her in a long time.

In fact, she"s raring to get outside again, but has to stay inside her comfortable air-conditioned room for another day or two, to ensure that she doesn"t get anything microbially suspicious in her mouth. When other caregivers (besides Penny) come by, she keeps pointing to her mouth exuberantly, as if to say: "look, they fixed me." It"s so nice to see Koko feeling herself again!

[body] => We forgot to mention the other day that the rag doll that Koko used to indicate that she needed an operation was the famous "Madeline" (shown above) who has stitches to teach children about appendix operations. Koko knew that her stitches would be located in her mouth.

Koko is still recovering from her tooth and gum procedure by relaxing indoors (or in her small yard) and eating very mouth-friendly foods - soy yogurt, cranberry jelly, even baby food for extra protein. We"ll keep you updated right here in our KokoPix Blog.

[title] => Koko even wears her birthday lei to meals.
[body] => The colorful lei above was one of Koko"s birthday presents this year (when she turned 33 on July 4th). She likes it so much that she often wears it during meals. Perhaps she"s sending us a message that it"s time to get on with completing the new Maui Ape Preserve - we agree! (Aside: Once we gave Koko an Hawaiian lei made of real flowers, but it didn"t last very long - she ate the flowers.)

To get to know Koko better and learn why she"s a crucially important ambassador for her species. watch the new Koko & Friends DVD, or see the extraordinary NATURE documentary A Conversation with Koko Thank you!
