[title] => How much do I weigh; do I have to look?
[body] => Like most primates, Koko is sensitive about her weight. Here she is standing on a scale while Penny reads the results. Koko knows that to control her weight, she has to watch both her caloric (ie, food) intake and her activity levels. Fortunately she has a dedicated team of produce workers who can help her with the caloric part - and interacting with Ndume helps with the other part.

[body] => Whoops - we didn"t mean to hide Koko"s companion Ndume from you for so long, so here he is back in the camera lense again, highlighted by his favorite blue plastic pool and bright orange construction meshing.

Incidentally, tomorrow is the bi-annual rummage sale from which we usually find such gorilla gems and other enrichment items (toys, bedding, clothes etc.) so wish us continued success. We"ll show off any Koko and Ndume windfalls right here on KokoPix. [title] => Koko (and Ndume) make out well at rummage sale!
[body] => Dr. Penny Patterson and a staff member scavenged the local rummage sale today looking for enrichment items for Koko (shown above) and Ndume - whose birthday (Oct. 10) is being celebrated this Sunday (Oct. 16).

The "catch" was quite impressive, and included a couple of colorful 1-gorilla tents, lots of beautiful pillows, stuffed animals, dolls (including the male version of Koko"s favorite doll: "waterbaby") and sporting items (basketball, soccerball and even some plastic snow saucers - the gorillas love to sit on them). We"ll show you more after the party. Please stay tuned for the great ape fun . . .. . [title] => Ndume celebrates his 24th birthday (Oct. 10) today
[body] => Ndume"s birthday was actually on Oct. 10, but we decided to celebrate it one week later so there would be time to assemble presents (for both Ndume and Koko) and have a proper gathering. While Ndume doesn"t make a big deal about his birthdays, he does appreciate the attention, and we will be sure to share this year"s birthday photo ops with you later in the week, so you can see Ndume"s surprise responses for yourself.

Note: Ndume is 10 years younger than Koko, which makes him an ideal mate for her. Will this be the year of mating, or will it take a higher female-to-male ratio and/or a warmer climate? Ndume celebrates his 24th birthday (Oct.

Ndume"s birthday was actually on Oct. 10, but we decided to celebrate it one week later so there would be time to assemble presents (for both Ndume and Koko) and have a proper gathering. While Ndume doesn"t make a big deal about his birthdays, he does appreciate the attention, and we will be sure to share this Read more

[title] => Koko"s windfall on Ndume"s birthday: the male counterpart of her "waterbaby"
[body] => Penny couldn"t have been happier or more surprised when she found a "male" version of Koko"s favorite doll, "waterbaby," at the local rummage sale last week. Koko"s original waterbaby is a female human rubber baby doll that has a place to fill it up with water (that comes out when you squeeze it). Koko would take the female waterbaby with her everywhere, and hold it under her arm like a gorilla baby.

When Penny gave Koko Mr. Waterbaby (the one she"s holding in the photo), as a "you"re special too" present for Ndume"s birthday party earlier this week, Koko liked it so much that she has been ignoring Ms. Waterbaby ever since. One of the neat things about the male version is that the water comes out of his eyes (like tears) when you squeeze it. Will Koko favor Mr. Waterbaby (above right) forever, or will she remember her first "child?" Only Koko knows for sure - stay tuned for the sequel to this gripping soap opera.

Hopefully there"s a real gorilla baby in Koko"s future, which would be the happiest plot twist of all. Dr. Ron Cohn, Koko"s male mentor and photo-documentarian, has been taking advantage of recent improvements in digital photography to obtain some great closeups of gorillas Koko and Ndume. [title] => Koko Interviews New Kittens for her 34th Birthday
[body] => As one of her birthday presents, Koko was visited by a litter of kittens from the San Francisco SPCA, with the hope that she might pick one to be her own. Alas, although she did like the little orange tabby shown here, there wasn"t a strong enough bond to warrant a full time commitment. More kitty interviews are anticipated.

You can view more photos of Koko"s birthday kitten visit on our home page during Koko"s birthday week, and in the new "Koko"s Birthday Highlights" section after that.

Note: Koko"s beloved cat Smoky passed away last year (2004) after a long and famous life as the cat that helped Koko get over her first kitten, All Ball.
