Careers
in Inter-Species Communication
If
you wish to work in the field of inter-species communication,
a good way to start would be to get involved with animals as a
volunteer at either a research project or local zoo. Hopefully,
you will gain exposure to the great apes or other animals of specific
interest to you.
Those who undertake research on the language capabilities of nonhuman
primates usually have advanced college degrees in anthropology,
psychology, behavioral primatology or animal behavior. Undergraduates
interested in pursuing this line of work would do well to enroll
in courses in anthropology, ethology, animal behavior and communication,
comparative and developmental psychology, linguistics, psycholinguistics
and sign language.
You may want to check Brown University's on-line list of
colleges that offer graduate primatology programs, which is located
at http://www.brown.edu/Research/Primate/dir00.html. A college
counselor should also be able to offer you additional guidance
on how to plan a curriculum focused on behavioral research in
primates.
If you would prefer a hard copy of this list, write to us at:

Gorilla Foundation/Koko.org
Attn: Careers

or
Email: contactus@koko.org
Note:
The main characteristics the Gorilla Foundation/Koko.org looks for
in those who wish to work with the gorillas are a love of animals,
dedication, rapport with gorillas, skill in sign language, educational
background, experience with primates (human or nonhuman), and the
ability to follow instructions and take responsibility. A great
deal of exciting work remains to be done as we explore the minds and
spirits of other species, and thus enrich our own.
