    [title] => Koko Gives a "High 5"
    [body] => As some of you know, gorillas like to be higher than humans when the two interact (which is why mountain gorilla tour guides ask you to sit down when you actually find a gorilla family).

Koko seems to agree with this cultural trait, and often places herself about 20 feet above the fray, as shown here.

High platforms attached to mesh walls are also good because they help femaie gorillas (like Koko) evade male gorillas (like Ndume) when they"re not in the mood to play - they also provide a good place to "meditate." [title] => Koko Brushes Her Hair (in the mirror of course)
    [body] => Most of you who tune in to Koko.org regularly are probably way beyond being surprised that gorillas can recognize themselves in a mirror - which is supposed to be a sign of conscious self-awareness according to psychologists. But this photo of Koko brushing her hair while looking in a hand-held mirror demonstrates more than self-awareness, it also demonstrates another typically "human" trait: vanity.

If you have any doubts that Koko senses the world pretty much like you and I (though perhaps without the extraneous thoughts) just visit KokoTV online, or watch the video "A Conversation with Koko." [title] => Koko's Keyboard
    [body] => Koko explores a new electronic keyboard given to her as a gift by Gorilla Foundation supporters Tom and Marilyn Piggot. The keyboard has built in orchestral sounds as well as a light-driven tutorial. Koko was a little shaken when the sound abruptly switched form piano to drum, but she"s starting to get the hang of it.

We"ll let you know how/if she progresses with her musical explorations, and if she decides to compose any tunes of her own. (Anyone out there developing an American Ape Idol reality show?)

Thank you, Marilyn and Tom, for introducing this new sensory dimension to Koko. [title] => Penny gets into the act ...
    [body] => As Koko experiments with her new electronic muscial keyboard, Dr. Penny Patterson helps with the controls, which can change the sound to play a number of different instruments.

Besides sign language and art, music offers another potential form of interspecies communication - though it is probably more effective at conveying emotions than thoughts. Also, the most resonant communication media seems to be an individual thing. For example, Koko seems to prefer sign language to art, while her late silverback companion, Michael, preferred art and music to words.
