[title] => Koko ponders a question
[body] => Penny asks Koko a question and Koko ponders the answer. Why isn"t Penny using sign language? Because Koko understands even more spoken English than she does American Sign Language (2000+ words vs 1000+ words).

When Koko was a young student, Penny and staff would almost always speak simultaneously as they signed to her. This turned out to be a very good idea, as Koko can now understand more people than can understand her (signing), which empowers her as an ambassador for her species.

Perhaps she will learn some new languages as we reach across the globe via internet video-conferencing. (See "Interspecies Communication Research" on Koko"s WishList.) [title] => Koko tries to read Penny"s handwriting
[body] => Koko isn"t the only one who has difficulty reading Penny"s handwriting. We are looking for the latest technology in computer handwriting recognition so that we can digitally archive 3 decades of research diary notes from Penny and other gorilla caregivers
into our new multi-disciplilnary database. If you have any specific information on such technology, please email us at kokopix@koko.org.

PS: Notice that Koko is reading the diary upside down. She often does this, as when she was young she was usually read to by caregivers sitting opposite her. So she had to learn to follow the text upside down. Some children actually learn to read this way. [title] => Is that a real grilla?
[body] => Someone emailed us that question in response to the Jan. 12 KokoPix. It"s hard to believe sometimes that gorillas can act (and think and feel) so much like us - without having an actor inside. But we have "actors" inside us too, and sometimes the way we act probably prompts gorillas like Koko to ask "is that a real human?".

By the way, Koko has been spending more time inside this past week, as the temperatures in northern California have been getting down below freezing at night - not the ideal temperature for lowland gorillas. Thank goodness (and human scientists and engineers) for climate control technology. [title] => Koko Remembers Snowflake
[body] => Koko looks at a National Geographic photo of the famous albino gorilla, Snowflake, who lived at the Barcelona Zoo, and recently passed away.

Koko has known about Snowflake since they were both youngsters, and even had a poster of him in her room. Just before Snowflake passed away, we were discussing the possiblity of setting up a videoconference between Koko and Snowflake to enable them to finally "meet." It would have been a great moment - the 2 most famous gorillas in the world saying hello across the continents. Koko will always remember and admire Snowflake.
